Daily Meditation Practice

Practicing daily meditation is though to bring a certain kind of joy into ones life. This joy, it is said, stems from having the ability to watch ones mind in action through daily meditation. In order to practice this type of meditation the meditator needs an object or target to concentrate on and anchor us in the current moment.

One may use an outside inanimate object or one may concentrate on breathing, but the mind must have something consistent to focus its attention on, that which will become the meditator’s object of meditation.

While the meditator’s aim is to keep the mind focused on this object, one should not become discouraged at distraction or wandering of the mind. By simply refocusing attention on the object of choice the mind will be able to continue in meditation. It is when one becomes discouraged that this may be lost.

As the mind becomes calmer the meditator will want to keep focus on the object of attention and not let it contemplate the experience.

This type of meditation differs from mindfulness meditation in that in mindfulness meditation we seek to welcome all aspects and experiences involved with the meditation, rather than focus on only one object. This difference is the distinguishing aspect between the two types of meditation while otherwise they are much alike.
