Meditation on the Wounds of Christ

Meditation on the Wounds of Christ, also referred to as the Five Wounds Meditation, is considered a liturgical meditation in which the focus points are Christ’s wounds from the cross. This type of meditation is based on the Journey in Four Directions and the Silent Center.

One distinguishing difference between Five Wounds meditation and most other meditations is the presence of others in the room with you. Five to seven speakers as well as the congregation will be involved in this form of meditation, speaking the meditation lines from areas in relation to the main wounds that Jesus suffered on the cross.

The first speaker standing at the center back area of the worship space, the second speaker standing directly opposite the third speaker, and both a bit further forward than the first speaker. The fourth speaker will stand near the front center and finally the fifth will be located at the point in which an imaginary line would be drawn between the first and fourth and/or the second and third.

The placement of the speakers helps individuals to enter into there state of meditation more easily. When everyone is in place each person individually speaks the specific lines given to them.

Those wishing to partake in this form of meditation may use other things to help them focus on the five wounds as well, such as a crucifixion, or cross with the areas of the five wounds illuminated. One may also wish to add hymns between the prayers.

Those who practice this type of meditation feel that it brings the individual closer to the understanding of the suffering that Jesus endured.
