Shamatha Meditation
Mindfulness meditation, or shamatha meditation, is said to be the key to the present moment, and that without one will not have the opportunity to see the world clearly but will instead continue to be lost in the wanderings of ones mind. This type of meditation not only helps us to stay connected to all that we do but also helps us to stay connected to all those around us.
It is through this type of meditation that we may be able to look inward and explore the nature of our minds beyond anything we may have experience prior to practicing this type of meditation.
The actual practice of mindfulness meditation is quite simple and begins with concentrating on ones breathing, paying attention only to each breath in, and again each breath out. Breathing, though, should not be forced by the meditator but only concentrated on, the rhythm of the breathing should be normal as well.
Although this is a simple task, it is not an easy one. One must not allow their minds to wander away from the task at hand and become involved in thinking of those things that they normally would.
The result of this concentration will be an experience of calmness within ones self. On this journey of meditation the individual will begin to learn and understand better the truth of who they are. Individuals practicing this type of meditation will began to see how quickly the mind moves and then take the opportunity to slow it down and gain a better understanding of oneself.
